Let the Science Speak

He’s back and still talking the talk, the straight talk, that made him famous. Doctor Anthony S. Fauci, out of sight since last November, appeared before reporters at the White House briefing room this past week ready to tell it like it is. In other words, tell the truth about the coronavirus pandemic, which has killed more than 417,000 Americans in just one year.

“The idea that you can get up here and talk about what you know – what the evidence, what the science is – and know that’s it, let the science speak,” Dr. Fauci said. “It is somewhat of a liberating feeling.”

Especially after working for an administration known for misleading statements, half-truths and outright lies. The Washington Post counted the Trump Administration’s misleading claims. The total: 30,573. According to the Post, more than half of those misleading claims came in former President Trump’s final year. During that period, Trump also said that the coronavirus would disappear like a miracle. Right! Widespread voter fraud cost him the election, too!

Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and his new boss, President Joe Biden, are not painting a rosy picture or warning about fake hoaxes. Both have warned that the virus, first diagnosed in the U.S. just one year ago, could kill even more Americans within a few weeks. Indeed, the death toll is expected to rise to more than 500,000 by mid-February. The various strains now reported in the United Kingdom and elsewhere could cause the virus to spread more quickly. Even worse, those strains could be more deadly. The Centers for Disease Control is investigating the mortality issue right now.

Biden has promised to get one hundred million Americans vaccinated in the first one hundred days of his term. Some think that is ambitious given the distribution foul-ups throughout the nation already. Nonetheless, it is certainly worth the effort. America needs to bury her dead, get back to work, back to school, go out to eat, hang out at the mall, and get on the road again. But it will not happen overnight. Fauci predicted that if all goes well, America might be on the way back to what is considered normal by next fall.

In the meantime, those infuriating masks will remain with us. Issuing an executive order, President Biden ordered masks worn in all federal buildings. Even those Republicans who agree that masks are part of the hoax might find some benefit in donning a face mask in the coming weeks.

If they wore a mask in the Senate chamber during former President Trump’s impeachment trial – Trump is charged with inciting an insurrection by encouraging his supporters to storm the capitol and overturn the election – they might be unrecognizable. In other words, those Republicans interested in preserving democracy, our country and saving their party, could vote to convict without being recognized by the deplorables whom Trump insists are his base. The same deplorables who vowed to get any Republican who turns on Trump, including former Vice President Mike Pence whom they wanted to hang.

I can see the headlines now. Face Masks Save America! Seventeen anonymous Republican Senators, all wearing masks, today joined Senate Democrats to send a message. America remains the land of the free, home of the brave, indivisible with justice for all, governed by leaders elected by the people not chosen by a lynch mob.
